HPC survey

If you buy a home in our historic district and are planning to remodel or make exterior repairs, you will need to determine whether your job requires a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA).

A COA is not required:

  • If you are doing only interior work.
  • If you are doing exterior repair or maintenance without changing the design or materials.
  • If you are repainting or planting vegetation.

A COA is required:

  • If your house or building is located in the Historic District and you are making exterior changes to ANY structure on your property for demolition, fences, paving or new construction.

Apply for a COA Online

Applications must be complete with supporting materials such as site plans, drawings, and photos so the Commission can make an informed decision.

Applications must be submitted 30 days prior to the Commission meeting.

Attend the Meeting

Applicants are asked to attend the meeting to answer questions and work with the Commission in finding the best possible solutions. Historic Preservation Commission Meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at City Hall at 6:00 p.m. The meeting is open to the public.

Most applications are approved as submitted with minor changes. COAs are good for 12 months if you start your project within 6 months. Any changes to the initial plans must be reviewed by the Commission.
